Lookout vs Rollbar for Laravel: which error tracker fits?
An honest, Laravel-focused comparison of Lookout and Rollbar — setup, framework depth, grouping, alert noise, multi-stack, pricing, and lock-in.
If you're picking error tracking for a Laravel app, Rollbar is a common contender — real-time error monitoring with strong grouping, deploy tracking, and a query language for digging through errors. Lookout is the one I'm building. I run Lookout, so treat me as biased — but I've kept this about fit, not winners.
Pricing and plans for other tools change often. The Lookout numbers below are current; for Rollbar, check their own pricing and docs before you decide.
The short version
- Rollbar — a capable, real-time error tracker with configurable grouping, deploy and version tracking, RQL (its query language), and a long list of workflow integrations. Broad and general-purpose, used across many languages and team sizes.
- Lookout — Laravel-deep and multi-stack, built around a one-line install, fingerprint grouping, alerts that wake the right person, and a free tier you can actually use — on a plain-HTTP contract so you're not locked in.
Setup friction
Both install without drama. Rollbar's Laravel integration is its rollbar/rollbar-laravel package plus an access token. Lookout's goal is two commands and an env value: composer require lookout/tracing, php artisan lookout:install, paste a project API key. Lookout's ingest is plain HTTP/JSON, so there's no agent to babysit.
Framework depth
Rollbar has good Laravel support and shines on configurable grouping — fingerprint rules, custom grouping, and RQL for slicing errors after the fact. Lookout leans on Laravel internals instead: it traces Blade views, Eloquent queries, and queued jobs, and automatically flags N+1 queries and slow queries out of the box. If you want maximum control over grouping logic, Rollbar gives you knobs; if you want sensible Laravel-aware defaults that need little tuning, that's Lookout's bias.
Signal vs. noise
Both group errors well. Lookout's default is the quiet path: fingerprint grouping collapses duplicates into a single issue, and alert rules fire on thresholds over a 1h or 24h window, so a spike pages someone once instead of per event. Evaluate the out-of-the-box noise level, not just what's tunable.
Beyond Laravel
Rollbar is broadly cross-platform. So is Lookout — one ingest contract across PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, Go, Swift, Kotlin, and WordPress, so a Node frontend, a Rails service, or a mobile app reports into the same dashboard rather than a separate tool.
Lock-in
Lookout's ingest is documented plain HTTP and JSON — anything that can POST JSON can send events, and the SDKs are thin clients over that contract. Low cost-of-leaving is deliberate; it keeps the incentive on the product.
Pricing (Lookout)
Lookout's current plans:
| Plan | Price | Events / month | Projects | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free (no card) | 10,000 | 1 | Short-term |
| Hobby | $9/mo | 25,000 | 1 | 30 days |
| Standard | $29/mo | 100,000 | Unlimited | 30 days |
| Growth | $79/mo | 500,000 | Unlimited | 90 days |
| Premium | $299/mo | Unlimited | Unlimited | 90 days |
The Starter tier exists so you can run real production traffic through Lookout and decide with your own data. Compare against Rollbar's current pricing for your event volume.
How to choose
- Want fine-grained, configurable grouping and a query language to slice errors after the fact? Rollbar gives you the control.
- Want Laravel depth, automatic N+1 and slow-query detection, low noise, no lock-in, and a free tier you can actually use? That's what I'm building Lookout to be.
Run the same week of real errors through both and let the data decide. Spin up a free Lookout project — or read the Lookout vs Sentry vs Flare comparison if those are also in the running.
